So I am Kenyan and love to read about all things Kenyan but when I came upon this blog post by one of my favorite blogs in the whole wide world INfashuated.com, I could’ve passed out from pure excitement. Kenya’s reputation has revolved around violence, with the most recent example of the 2007-08 election that sparked turbulent violence among a small section of the country – though the news will have you believe it engulfed the whole country but I digress – and also Tourism of the country’s beautiful people, land, and wildlife.
This wonderful article focuses on, in my opinion, a much-ignored, highly thriving aspect of Kenyan culture, Fashion. Being kept alive through the modern Kenyan youth, Kenyan Fashion has grown to be a burgeoning industry where new ideas are born and individual style reigns supreme. This article by INfashuated.com focuses on a photoshoot by photographer, Alicia Hawkins, and stylist, Anders Sølvsten Thomsen shot in Nairobi, Kenya and profiled in the recent issue (Issue 7 – 2012) of love magazine.
In this campaign, the models’ beautiful dark skin in juxstaposed against the clean, crisp, bright attire. They are cast against the sparse Kenyan landscape with hints of the modern world depicted with electrical wires and building skylines in the far background. The models jump out of the photos in modern-day dress upon an old-world landscape, mother Africa herself. I truly enjoy the light this campaign shines on my homeland and would like to express my gratitude to the writers, editors and contributers extrodinnaire of INfashuated.com, James Buford and Alicia Fairclough for profiling this on their wonderous blog along with love magazine for embarking on this journey and creating these beautiful images.
