5 Lessons Beyoncé Has Taught Me

I recently watched the Beyoncé’s interview with Oprah and her documentary where she self-documents her journey in motherhood, fame, family, friends and being true to herself as an artist. When watching the documentaries these are the lessons I learned from Queen Bey that I can relate to my life.

  1. Tell Them Just Enough. In her interview and documentary, I feel she revealed just enough to make her fans feel like they are being invited into a part of her world they never knew of before but still maintained her privacy. She spoke about every situation in her life that we all wanted to know but never told every single detail of the story. I feel this approach can work well when dealing with people in your life who may feel entitled to knowing your business. This may be co-workers, acquaintances, or that nosy neighbor.
  2. Remember to Count Your Blessings. She consistently thanked God for all her blessings in every scene. Whether she was speaking to her husband, Jay Z, her mother, her nephew, her daughter, her friends, she always reminded them that they were collectively blessed to be there because of God. I think no matter what higher being or spiritual guide you may believe in, take time to count your blessings. Even for those of you who don’t believe, take time to appreciate the gifts that surround you on a daily basis. We are not all lounging on a yacht cruising the Indian Ocean but the love and positive people that surround you are your sunsets on beaches, your red carpet gowns, your globe-trotting adventures, your blessings and your happiness.
  3. Spend Time With Yourself. During the documentary, Beyoncé explains that the best way for her to get out every thought in her head is to speak to herself through her laptop camera. I have to say at first I found this quite arrogant, the thought that she spends a majority of her time looking at herself talking about herself. But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Who knows you better than yourself? Who should know you better than yourself, no one. I am a strong advocate for “alone time.” I love “alone time.” I know some people don’t like silence or find it boring but I find it therapeutic. My alone time consists of reading. Sitting cozy in one place with nothing but a book and some hot tea is all I need sometimes.
  4. Get Lost In Your Craft. There is no one who can entertain like Beyoncé. A large part of the documentary focuses on her rehearsals and the work she puts into every single performance whether on stage or in the studio. The raw emotion she pours into every note is palpable and the research behind her choreography is thorough. I watched her and thought about my chosen craft and I have to say I have come a long way but sometimes the work suffers when negative energy surrounds you. The drive to keep pushing beyond your own expectations may sometimes fade but success is the best reward. I am reminded of my goals and to get lost in my craft.
  5. Who Run The World, Girls. I doubt that she would call herself a feminist but I believe she is one in her own right. She stresses the importance of uplifting women with her music and performances and consistently uses an army of females as her back drop when performing. Women are make the world go round and her unrelenting passion for preaching girl power reminds me that though you may run into some haters, we are in this together and we can run the world. Try saying something positive to every female you share time with for the next month and see the changes it will make in your interactions.

Have you watched either the interview or documentary? What did you like or didn’t like about either?
